Taxicab Accidents

Chicago taxi accidents regularly occur.  Taxicab accidents are prone to happen due to many reasons, including the number of miles driven, busy city streets and other traffic congestion.

As well, by their nature, taxicabs routinely stop to pick up and drop off passengers.

Taxi crashes can occur for many reasons.  These accidents can be the fault of the taxi driver, or another motorist or party.  Those accidents that are the fault of the taxi driver can occur due to taxi driver error, drunk driving or drug-impaired driving, or a malfunction of the vehicle.  Roadway conditions, such as adverse weather conditions, can also contribute to or cause a taxi crash.  As with any vehicle travel, road hazards may exist, such as roadway deformities, that can also cause a taxi crash.

Various Chicago taxi accidents have been summarized in the blog.  Included in these posts is one that discusses a Cook County jury verdict for a 2005 taxi accident.  In that accident, a passenger in a taxi filed a lawsuit with regard to injuries suffered after the taxi ran into a concrete barrier.  Among the alleged injuries was severe brain damage.

Another post discusses a 2014 fatal taxi accident that occurred in Chicago's Old Town neighborhood.  In that accident, a woman was fatally struck by a taxi, and died from her accident injuries three weeks after being hit.  The taxi driver was ticketed.

As seen in these Chicago cab accidents, as well as many others, injuries have the potential to be both extensive and serious in nature.  Some are life-threatening and can lead to death.

Often, those who have been injured in cab accidents seek to file a personal injury lawsuit if they were not at fault for the accident.  While there are many reasons as to why an injured person would want to file a lawsuit, one of the main reasons is to get injury compensation.  Often, this injury compensation is needed due to the expense incurred for medical treatment.

Depending upon the type of accident injuries, they may require hospitalization; diagnostic tests, such as blood tests; CT scans and MRIs; surgeries; and various types of rehabilitation, including physical and occupational rehabilitation.

The medical bills for injury treatment can be very high, even if someone has good health insurance.  Among the reasons that these bills can be high include inherently expensive medical care, health care deductibles, and non-covered items and treatments.  As well, certain medical procedures and treatments, such as physical therapy, may be only partially covered.

Medical bills may be especially high if injuries involve ongoing medical treatment, either on a temporary basis or permanent basis.

There are other financial issues that may develop due to the crash.  For instance, if there is an inability to work for a time, there may be lost wages.  In some cases, an injury may prohibit the person from returning to the same type of work they had performed due to the crash.

In cases where a person has been killed due to a taxi accident, relevant parties may seek compensation through the filing of a wrongful death lawsuit.
